Emergency Preparedness Is For Everyone! Don't Wait!

5/5/2022 (Permalink)

Emergency preparedness is for everyone. The more basic preparedness needs that each family or individual can prepare for themselves, the less stress there will be placed on emergency management services. Summer storms, tornadoes and hurricanes often come with damaging winds and rain, and have similar preps even though they occur in different areas of the country. (Side note – the United States has more tornadoes each year than any other country, averaging over 1000 per year, but the United Kingdom has the highest number of tornadoes per unit of land area, per foreignpolicy.com). Everyone should take the time to make these basic emergency preparedness preps, no matter what region you live in. They may just save your life and the lives of those you care about.

Step One:  Have An Emergency Preparedness Plan

Step Two: Prep Your Emergency Preparedness Essentials

Step Three:  Prepare Your Home for Summer Storms and High Winds

Do You Have A Plan In Place If Your Power Goes Out?

Extended power outages may impact the whole community and the economy. A power outage is when the electrical power goes out unexpectedly. A power outage may:
  • Disrupt communications, water, and transportation.

  • Close retail businesses, grocery stores, gas stations, ATMs, banks, and other services.

  • Cause food spoilage and water contamination.

  • Prevent use of medical devices.

PROTECT YOURSELF DURING A POWER OUTAGE:

  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.

  • Only use generators outdoors and away from windows.

  • Do not use a gas stove to heat your home.

  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.

  • Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices.

  • If safe, go to an alternate location for heat or cooling.

  • Check on neighbors.

HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN A POWER OUTAGE THREATENS:

Prepare NOW

  • Take an inventory of the items you need that rely on electricity.
  • Talk to your medical provider about a power outage plan for medical devices powered by electricity and refrigerated medicines. Find out how long medication can be stored at higher temperatures and get specific guidance for any medications that are critical for life.
  • Plan for batteries and other alternatives to meet your needs when the power goes out.
  • Sign up for local alerts and warning systems. Monitor weather reports.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors with battery backup in central locations on every level of your home.
  • Determine whether your home phone will work in a power outage and how long battery backup will last.
  • Review the supplies that are available in case of a power outage. Have flashlights with extra batteries for every household member. Have enough nonperishable food and water.
  • Use a thermometer in the refrigerator and freezer so that you can know the temperature when the power is restored. Throw out food if the temperature is 40 degrees or higher.

Do You Know How To Properly Use A Fire Extinguisher?

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

All of us at SERVPRO hope you never have a fire. If the worst happens, we are experts in cleaning the damage left by smoke and fire in your home or office.

Fire extinguishers may help prevent fire damage or smoke damage, but only if you know how to use them.

SERVPRO wants to share these tips from FEMA. You can try to fight a small fire only if:

  • You have alerted others in the building that there is a fire
  • Someone has called the fire department
  • You are physically able to use a fire extinguisher
  • The fire is small and contained (like a wastebasket)
  • You are safe from the fire’s smoke
  • You have a clear escape route

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: SERVPRO suggests you remember PASS:

Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.

Aim at the base of the fire.

Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.

Sweep the nozzle side to side.

If you see a small fire at your place of business or home, and you think you can take care of it yourself, use these tips above. If you have any worries, you and everyone should leave the building and call 9-1-1 when you are safe, outside.

Removal of Moisture Behind Walls In Calumet City-Lansing Homes

5/1/2022 (Permalink)

Water loss incidents can occur from many different sources in your Calumet City- Lansing home, but aging plumbing often plays a contributing factor. Many of the older homes in the area still have metal piping throughout the property, which can begin to degrade and erode over time, especially when exposed to higher mineral elements in the public water such as iron and manganese. These minerals are not harmful to consume, yet, can have a damaging effect on older pipes when sediment builds up around connections, bends, and fixtures.

Once a problem has started, water damage can soon develop in your Calumet City- Lansing home through leaks in the weakest portions of the plumbing. These can be challenging to chase down, as the moisture and dampness can affect a broad area. To prevent excessive tear out and replacement once you have encountered water damage, you can reach out to our SERVPRO professionals for fast and effective restoration and repair.

Our team that arrives at your home comes equipped with detection technology to help them both identify leaks in the plumbing behind the walls, and identify the full scope of the water damage that your home has sustained throughout the time that the pipe has been leaking water. Our auditory equipment can help us to hear behind drywall to determine the exact point of the leak only to remove portions of wall required for us to repair the damaged plumbing and begin drying efforts effectively.

To better place our drying equipment, our thermal imagery cameras can identify moisture pockets behind walls of your home to determine where focused drying efforts must occur to remove the dampness present. If the damage is severe enough, our SERVPRO technicians might also implement our injectidry system to force heated air through wall cavities to dry them efficiently before secondary effects like mold growth can occur.

While water damage might happen from a variety of sources, clean up and drying efforts need to begin promptly to prevent excessive structural concerns. Give our SERVPRO of Calumet City- Lansing rapid response team a call 24/7 at 708-627-0077.

Steps To Take After Water Damage to Flooring in Your Home

5/1/2022 (Permalink)

Water can be a very destructive force and adversely affect just about every part of your home's structure, including flooring. Whether the issue is severe weather, a malfunctioning appliance, burst pipes, or a leaking roof, handling water damage to flooring as early as possible is the key to avoiding huge hassles down the line.

Homeowners who suspect water damage to flooring in Bradley should take immediate action before the problem gets worse. If your home's floors have been affected by an influx of water, here are some things to keep in mind.

  1. Have any excess water removed before refinishing wood floors.

Professional removal of excess water is essential before refinishing wood flooring. Otherwise, it may end up warping and cause structural damage. It can take weeks for wood floors to dry out on their own, and by then mold will likely become a problem. SERVPRO technicians will quickly remove the water from your floors and ensure the area is dry and ready to be refinished.

  1. Prevent mold and mildew growth by calling an expert.

Some homeowners attempt to remove water damage to flooring on their own. However, they're typically unable to get the water out of each floor layer. The excess moisture then leads to mold and mildew, which are more challenging to eliminate. SERVPRO has industrial grade equipment that we use to ensure no moisture remains, which is vital to stopping the growth of harmful mold and mildew.

  1. Don't automatically assume your carpets will be a lost cause.

If you look at the water damage to flooring in your home and think there's no way your carpet can be salvaged, call us first. We're experts at restoring water damaged areas, and we may be able to extract the water from your carpets and sub floors and save you the expense of completely replacing it.

If your home's flooring has been affected by water damage, count on the team at SERVPRO of Calumet City- Lansing to get it back in excellent condition. For a quote or to learn more about our water damage restoration services, call us at 708-627-0077.

This Spring will bring severe thunderstorms and other bad weather.

Thunderstorms are a type of storm that we tend to downplay in terms of its severity, as they often come and go, some largely harmless and others leaving a long path of destruction. At their worst, thunderstorms can produce high winds, intense bursts of rain, and hail, leading to downed trees and powerlines, as well as flash flooding. According to the American Red Cross, lightning produced from thunderstorms causes more deaths than hurricanes and tornadoes. Therefore, it is important to prepare your home for the worst when it comes to thunderstorms. In this blog, we’ll explore a few ways in which you can protect your home from thunderstorm damage.

3 Thunderstorm Safety Tips

The American Red Cross has published lists of tips for thunderstorm safety before, during, and after a thunderstorm. For the purposes of this blog, we would like to spotlight thunderstorm safety tips that are specifically designed to prevent storm damage to your home. The first tip is to have a list of things to bring inside before a thunderstorm. For example, if you have anything large or heavy outside that can potentially be transported inside, it may be beneficial to do so, as large objects can be picked up by the wind and inflict damage upon your home. Next, it may be helpful to double-check that your homes’ doors and windows are completely and securely shut. When it comes to windows, installing shutters may provide additional support, as they can prevent windows from breaking. Lastly, we mentioned earlier that thunderstorms can lead to downed trees, which makes it imperative that trees and other types of shrubbery are trimmed as best as possible in order to decrease the chances of branches flying from trees.

Your Home Is Your Biggest Investment - When Emergencies Happen, SERVPRO Is Ready!

3/14/2022 (Permalink)

One of the most considerable investments that an individual makes in their lifetime is their home. Caring for your Calumet City/Lansing property can sometimes feel easier said than done. Whether you have protected original construction materials like wood flooring to these options getting installed along with some aesthetic and functional upgrades to the home, water loss incidents, and other damaging emergencies can threaten the strength and integrity of these materials. As a premier restoration company in the area, we want to show our potential customers some of the approaches we take to protect their investments like flooring amid a crisis.

While those with water and moisture resistant flooring homes have had more success avoiding substantial Calumet City/Lansing  from penetrative dampness and saturation, not all homes have these options installed. Natural hardwood has multiple layers of considerations for our SERVPRO team once affected by spreading water damage, beginning with the best approaches for drying out these materials. Also, our technicians must diligently remain aware of how this saturation might affect joists and supports beneath the main floor.

Our professionals have multiple specialized tools to help with the moisture removal from the planks of your flooring. A standard application for hardwood options is the drying mats. This derivative of our Injecti-Dry System helps to control the draw of humidity and saturation from the flooring materials to control the degree of dryness ultimately achieved. Getting the floors too dry can be as damaging as allowing them to stay saturated.

Drying is only part of the equation for water damage, however. Residues, dirt, and debris that can accompany spreading water throughout your property can come to rest on the surfaces of wood flooring options. We have a dedicated line of SERVPRO cleaning products that can help not only to remove this dirt and grime but restore a sheen and gleam to your hardwood flooring that you might not have seen in the past. We have cleaning products that also feature wood oil that improves the aesthetic appeal and the longevity of these materials.

We are a team of professionals with a deep inventory of recovery tools and extensive experience and training in water restoration. No matter how severe loss incidents can be in your home, our SERVPRO of Calumet City/Lansing today team can help to make it “Like it never even happened.” Give us a call today at 708-627-0077

SERVPRO Can Remediate the Roof of Your Home After Storm Damage

3/14/2022 (Permalink)

Sometimes the damage from a storm is relatively inconsequential, and sometimes it can cause critical issues for your home, such as tearing off a portion of your roof. When a storm brings significant issues to your home, you need to contact professional help immediately. Leaving a roof open to the elements is extremely unwise and invites a plethora of problems for your home to arise.

For example, one of the problems that could come about by neglecting the storm damage to your roof could be the growth of mold damage. Mold spores only need excess moisture to be present for seventy-two hours to begin forming an active colony. Not only does mold compromise organic materials, such as the wooden frame of your home, but it can also cause health effects. For the betterment of your home, it is always wise to get help right away.

The hole in your roof came about by a storm from Lake Michigan. The intense wind of the storm ripped a portion of wood sheathing and shingles off of your rood, leaving a hole behind. When SERVPRO gets to your home, our first task is to cover the hole in your roof with a large blue tarp. From here, our technicians can split in half, to address the damage inside and out.

Half of our crew can go inside to preserve the interior contents and structural materials with standard cleanup and restoration services. Our technicians can use advanced technological devices, such as air movers, dehumidifiers, heaters, and flood drying mats to facilitate a drying process. The other half can remain behind outside and begin to fix your roof. SERVPRO can use 4 x 8 plywood panels to replace the sections that were ripped off your roof. From there, our technicians can reapply the waterproof underlay before re-shingling the area. Once we're finished, we can return your home to you, “Like it never even happened.”

If your home experiences sudden and destructive storm damage, never wait. Reach out to SERVPRO of Calumet City/Lansing today at 708-627-0077. We are ready to help you

After Fire Damage Protect Upholstery and Carpets

3/8/2022 (Permalink)

Hot air rises. As hot air rises, it pushes cooler air beneath, creating pressure. Understanding this process can help you to understand the types of harm your home may sustain during a fire, and how you can avoid excess damage. Property fires can come from just about anywhere. Leaving a hob on or a portable heater too close to dry fabrics and material can set alight, forcing you to evacuate in the middle of the night while the fire department deals with the resulting blaze.

The success of restoring your home depends on the extent of your knowledge of fire, smoke, and ash. Once a fire official declares your home is safe for entry, the first thing you may notice is the extent of soiling. The pressure created by rapidly rising temperatures causes smoke to spread out from the source of the fire exponentially. This pressure is why even a contained fire may present a homeowner with a myriad of soiling on ceilings, furniture, walls, inside cabinets, and your building's exterior.

When temperatures cool, loose soiling may drop from the ceiling onto your floor or furnishings. At SERVPRO of Calumet City- Lansing, we always recommend that homeowners protect furnishings in the affected area as quickly as possible. You can use old sheets or tarpaulin to place over surfaces and upholstery as a simple solution that could mitigate losses significantly. Unfortunately, while soots remain in the property, the affected rooms are unusable.

The quickest way to regain access to living rooms or kitchens is by using a professional fire restorer like SERVPRO of Calumet City- Lansing. Our team can scope the property, assess the damages, and put in place a gameplan to recover your contents. Carpets and upholstery that show signs of smoke damage are frequently restorable to a good condition. SERVPRO deposit carpet conditioners using truck-mounted wands in combination with rotary machines for upholstery and carpets. These can remove soiling while cleaning the carpet at the same time.

Key Causes Of Commercial Water Damage

3/3/2022 (Permalink)

The undesired result can be from numerous factors. The damages can result from flooding, roof leaks, frozen pipes, ice dams, and sewage backups. Additionally, disasters like fires can require extinguishing work from the fire department, leaving large quantities of standing water behind. No matter the cause of water intrusion, the effect is often the same: actual damage to the structural integrity of your property coupled with the compromise of safety to employees, and clients.

Identifying The Source Of The Problem. To deal with water damage effectively, you have to identify the source of the problem and then eliminate it. It's also important to know that there will be different methodologies for water damage restoration depending on the source. Excess water flowing from a broken or frozen pipe or ice damming on the roof will be handled differently than issues which result from floodwater or a sewage backup.

Avoiding DIY Projects. Business proprietors are tempted to begin the cleanup process by themselves to quickly reopen the doors to commerce. If the normal business traffic patterns have been disrupted, then it is time to call in SERVPRO, to mitigate water damage restoration time and costs. Rapid water pumping will diminish downtime and lessen damage to inventory, office furniture, supplies, and the building's structural components. Precise assessment and planning get results.

Contact SERVPRO Today. If your commercial property has been impacted by water damage, it's time to take action. When you call the friendly professionals of SERVPRO, you'll receive a fast response from IICRC-certified technicians who use cutting edge equipment and customized methodologies to expedite the restoration process. Our techs are trained in water damage restoration, applied structural drying techniques, odor control, and mold remediation. How To Prevent Water Damage From a Leaky Water Heater?

1/23/2022 (Permalink)

water heater When you discover a leaking water heater, acting fast and stopping the leak will help reduce any harm to your home.
If left unnoticed, a leaking water heater can flood your home and damage the surrounding areas. While an especially large leak that has damaged your walls and floors should be handled by a water damage restoration specialist, there are several steps you can take to try and stop the leaking and remove small amounts of water from your home before it becomes a much larger issue.

Common Causes of a Failed Water Heater

Depending on the source of the leak, a broken water heater may just require a quick repair or need to be replaced. If you’re not comfortable trying to repair the tank yourself, you should get the help of a professional plumber. When inspecting the water heater, you’ll find the leak may be at either the bottom or the top of the tank. Here are several common causes of a leaking water heater:

• Leaking drain valve
• Leaking pressure relief valve
• Leaking tank
• Excessive condensation
• Loose cold- and hot-water inlet and outlet connections
• Loose joint or stripped threaded nipple

Water Mitigation Procedures

If you’re sure you have a broken water heater on your hands, you will need to start by turning off the power supply, which can be powered by either electricity or gas and shutting off the water supply. SERVPRO Answers Your Question - Can I Avoid Sewage Problems?

sewage backup We are faster to any disaster and are here to help get you back to "Like it never even happened."
Ask the Experts: How Can I Avoid Sewage Problems?

A sewage cleaning entails far more than wiping down items. It's a complex situation that involves blocking off rooms, tearing out contaminated materials, and sanitizing space. All of this can take time, leading business owners in to lose valuable sales; therefore, it's in your best interest to become proactive, understanding, and preventing sewage overflows and claims. Here are three things commercial owners can do.

1. Promote Proper Disposal
A toilet overflow occurs when something is blocking the lines. While this may seem simple to fix, it can become more serious. These blocks eventually inhibit water flow when someone runs something else in the building such as a shower or washing machine. The liquid can get blocked, exiting from the nearest source, often a commode; thus, to reduce the chances of this happening, pay attention to what goes down the line. Make sure all employees understand that only toilet paper should be flushed. Post notices for customers to understand this as well. In addition, grease and other congealing items should not be placed down sinks but disposed of within the trashcan.

2. Notice Foundation Changes
At times the sewage cleaning isn't necessitated from something inside. Overgrown tree roots can run into underground systems, creating cracks and obstructions. This small break can take in dirt and eventually stopping up. Eventually, it will bust and category 3 water moves into your establishment. To avoid this, walk the grounds, observing any unusual shifts in the soil, odd puddles developing, or cracks in the cement. If you're uncertain, a water restoration company such as SERVPRO could evaluate the problem, determining the source.

3. Snake the Lines
A clogged pipe can often be remedied by running a snake through the drains. While a plunger uses force to push something down, this tool provides more pressure and application. Should you hear gurgling noises or notice a slow flow, it may be a good time to pull it out and give it a go.
You may be able to avoid sewage cleaning by remaining vigilant. Be cognizant of changes, acting promptly to dodge major complications.

What are the best ways to dry out documents? Contact SERVPRO!

1/18/2022 (Permalink)

document dry out Regardless of the type of wet documents you need to dry and restore, there are ways to save these important items.

A lot can go wrong if there's a flood in your office. Safety should be your No. 1 concern. Once you account for everyone's well-being, you'll take inventory of the damage. It's common to find wet documents in the aftermath of water issues. Many of these items may be highly sensitive and critical. Luckily, there are methods both you and the professionals can use to preserve these materials.

What You Can Do

For some flooding issues at work, you should let professional crews handle the cleanup. However, there are things you can do to protect your documents and ensure that they dry faster without ruining them.

Carefully remove any books, files, photographs, maps, or other documents from water.
Set out these items in a dry place.
For damp documents, flatten them out between two absorbent pieces of paper or cloth.

Calling In the Pros

Flood restoration crews have experience with document drying, in addition to removing water surfaces. It's a good idea to get help from skilled technicians when your documents have been submerged in water. Widespread damage is also a good reason to enlist the services of professional teams.

The Method

To spare your wet documents, technicians will use freeze-drying methods. To do this, a technician will freeze the materials. The next step is to evaporate the frozen water without allowing it to return to its liquid state. With freeze-drying, you can keep the dried-out paper from wrinkling and crinkling.

Sanitizing

When lying in the water, your documents could come into contact with dirt, debris, and other harmful material. The technicians will disinfect the paper to ensure that it is clean and doesn't pose any danger to you and other users of the documents.
Regardless of the type of wet documents you need to dry and restore, there are ways to save these important items. Follow these guidelines so you don't have to worry about losing your papers.

Mold damage to your home can cause serious problems. Mildew growth, on the other hand, is generally less severe. It can be tricky to tell the difference between them, but there are a few ways to distinguish the two categories of fungi.

Similarities

The words mold and mildew are often used interchangeably. This is likely due to the fact that both are fungi, and they share some similarities, including the following:

  • Thrive in wet locations
  • Spread quickly via spores
  • Cause a musty odor
  • Can be cleaned with fungicide

Because both mold and mildew need moisture to thrive, the same prevention techniques can be used for both fungi. Dry up water from leaks, spills, etc. as quickly as possible, and keep the humidity in your home lower than 50%. If you live in a particularly humid area, you may need to use a dehumidifier to keep the air sufficiently dry. Also, an air purification system can prevent both mildew and mold damage by capturing the spores before they have a chance to attach to a surface and colonize.

Differences

Although the two categories of fungi share a few characteristics, they have many differences. Mildew is generally lighter in color and has a fluffy, powdery or downy texture. Mold is typically darker and may appear slimy or fuzzy. Mildew grows only on surfaces, but mold can grow deeper within walls and beneath surfaces. Because of this, mold tends to be more difficult to eliminate. On the other hand, homeowners can usually remove mildew easily with a cleaner and a cloth or brush. Mold growth generally requires more intensive remediation methods and possibly professional intervention.
Whether you are dealing with mold or mildew, it is important to act quickly to minimize growth and mitigate the damage. If you are dealing with severe mold damage, an experienced restoration team can help you get your home back to normal quickly and safely.

Electricity Makes Our Lives Much Easier, But Always Be Cautious & Safe!

11/12/2021 (Permalink)

Outlet Electrical Safety

Flipping a light switch. Plugging in a coffee maker. Charging a laptop computer. These are second nature for most of us. Electricity makes our lives easier. However, we need to be cautious and keep safety in mind.

Here are some safety tips courtesy of the National Fire Protection Association.

  1. Have all electrical work done by a qualified electrician.
  2. When you are buying or remodeling a home, have it inspected by a qualified private inspector or in accordance with local requirements.
  3. Only use one heat producing appliances such as a coffee maker, toaster, space heater, etc. plugged into a receptacle outlet at a time.
  4.   Major appliances such as refrigerators, dryers, washers, stoves, air-conditioners, microwave ovens, etc. should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet. Extension cords and plug strips should not be used.
  5. Arc – fault circuit interrupters (AFCI’s).  These shut off electricity when a dangerous condition occurs. Consider having them installed in your home.
  6. Use ground – fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs).  These reduce the risk of shock they shut off an electrical circuit when it becomes a shock hazard. They should be installed inside the home in bathrooms, kitchen, garages and basements.  All outdoor receptacles should be GFCI protected.
  7. Testing ACFIs and GFCIs: Once a month according to the manufacturers recommendations.  You do not need a flame to start a fire. Fire is can start when heat builds up near things that burn. This can happen when a hot lightbulb is near things that burn.  Things such as cloth or paper, or a cord that has been placed under a carpet.
  8. Use ground – fault circuit interrupters to reduce the risk of shock.  These items shut off an electrical circuit when it becomes a shock hazard. They should be installed inside the home and bathrooms, kitchen, garages and basements.  All outdoor receptacles should be GFCI protected.
  9. Check electrical cords to make sure they are not running across doorways or under carpets. Extension cords are intended for temporary use. Have a qualified electrician add more receptacle outlets so you don’t have to use extension cords.
  10. Use a lightbulb with the right number of watts. There should be a sticker that indicates the right number of watts.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

Call a qualified electrician or your landlord if you have:

  • Frequent problems with blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers.

  • Flickering or dimming lights.
  • Sparks from an outlet.

Sump Pump Failure Can Cause More Damage Than You Think!

11/7/2021 (Permalink)

Sump Pump Failure If your sump pump does fail call (815) 935-0077 and a crew from SERVPRO of Kankakee County! We are here to help!

If your home has a wet basement, you’re not alone. The American Society of Home Inspectors estimates that more than 60 percent of homes have issues with water in the basement.A sump pump can be an effective option for preventing water damage. Installed in a pit in the basement, these units sense when the water from rain or snow melt is rising in the pit and approaching the floor level. The incoming water is then pumped outside before it can damage the home or its furnishings.Sump pumps are relatively low-maintenance devices, but you can help keep your unit operational by inspecting it regularly.

Steps in a regular maintenance program can include:

  • Checking the discharge line to make sure it is not stopped up or frozen. If necessary, unclog the air vent hole in the line.
  • Checking the inlet screen to ensure that it’s not clogged with residue and debris. Do this three or four times per year.
  • Making sure the float component is unobstructed and can move smoothly.
  • Scanning the pit and removing any visible debris, mud, or stones.
  • Testing the pump by slowly pouring a bucket of water into the pit. The float should rise with the water level, triggering the unit to start pumping. If pumping doesn’t begin, check to see that the unit is plugged in. Your float switch or check valve might also be at fault.
  • Going outside to see that water is discharging and flowing where it’s supposed to go – well away from your home.

Once a year, disconnect the pump from the power source and remove the unit. Flush it thoroughly with water to remove impurities and debris. While you have the pump out, also clean debris from the sump pit.  Reinstall the pump and reconnect the power source.  Test the unit by pouring a bucket of water into the pit and making sure the pump starts. If your unit has backup battery power, replace the battery every two to three years, or as directed by the manufacturer.Always refer to your pump’s instruction manual for specific information about maintenance and operation. More information about sump pumps is available from the Sump and Sewage Pump Manufacturers Association.

If your sump pump does fail call (815) 935-0077 and a crew from SERVPRO of Kankakee County will come out and dry your basement and all other ares that are wet.  We can also do Sump Pump Replacement if yours goes down.

Kitchen From Concept to Design to Completion--SERVPRO Restores and Remodels Kitchens in Bourbonnais.

Our population here in Bourbonnais is pretty stable. Couples come in to raise their families and find themselves still here, decades later, with their grandchildren. While many homes are at risk from floods, fire, and other disasters, other residences need a new kitchen or other updates to match the changes to their owner’s lives.

Bourbonnais kitchen remodel, regardless of why it happens, involves demolition, painting, installation, and more. SERVPRO, because we are a "full-repairs" company, can perform all of these tasks to upgrade a kitchen and any other room in a home. We do more than simply clean up and restore cosmetically or structurally damaged buildings. We can sit down with our client who has aspirations for a renovated kitchen and start the planning process.

Every remodel begins with some removal. Depending on the level of change needed, that may only be the old cabinets and countertops. To avoid damaging the home, our remodel teams disassemble as much as possible and remove the components for disposal or put it aside for reuse or donations to local charities. Where we have to pull framework from the wall, team members perform the demolition so as few as possible of the drywall panels require replacement.

Here, SERVPRO teams take on multiple tasks. Several members take extensive measurements to make certain all new cabinets properly fit while others hang new drywall panels. After completing the tasks, our crews clean, prep, and then paint the kitchen, so it looks as before the damaging incident. We can upgrade it with a new color that also better resists the effects of cooking and daily wear and tear. If the owner wants to keep the existing cabinets, team members strip and repaint or stain them. Our goal is to meet your expectations for a remodeled kitchen.

Now, our cabinet installers mark the measurements taken earlier and then attach the new framework to hold the cabinets. Once in place, they hang the new or repurposed and repainted cabinets. In addition to new cupboards, our teams can also remove and replace tile and linoleum. Yes, we also do flooring. Where needed, they can install new light fixtures in existing power sources, and even appliances except when the manufacturer requires one of their personnel to prevent voiding the warranty.

No matter if your kitchen has suffered through a disaster or has not aged well over the last few years, call SERVPRO of Kankakee County at (815) 935-0077 today. Our restoration teams can help remodel kitchens here, and in Bradley, Manteno, and Momence, to look better than new.

Before Thinking Your Wood Floors Are Lost Forever, call SERVPRO of Calumet City/ Lansing

7/26/2021 (Permalink)

Broken floors Call SERVPRO of Calumet City/ Lansing to get an expert opinion before thinking your wood floors are lost forever.

When your bathroom fixture or dishwasher leaks, the basement floods or a window is left open during a torrential downpour, your flooring can get quite wet. When these things happen, your flooring can sustain enough water damage that it has to be cleaned, repaired or even replaced. The guide below to flooring water damage costs can help you understand what steps will have to be taken to bring your floor back to a preloss state, if possible.

Water Damage to Hardwood Flooring
In humid or wet locations like the laundry area, bathrooms or the basement, flooring contractors try to discourage homeowners from installing hardwood flooring. When there is high humidity or a significant amount of water present, moisture gets into the wood, causing it to expand and producing separating, warping and cracking.

Flooring which is engineered handles humidity a lot better since the underlayment attached is made to expand and contract with normal humidity changes without damaging the solid wood layer on the top. It is however still not a good choice in locations that are humid and wet. In rooms with high RH, avoid wood. Concrete, tile or vinyl is preferred in these areas.

Water Damage to Laminate Flooring
Laminate flooring is composed of layers of material which will absorb water readily and swell, making the layers separate. This happens when water penetrates past the water-resistant barrier of the laminate top. This is often the result when a flood causing standing water to collect for an extended length of time. In this case, laminate flooring needs to be replaced, as there is no cost-effective way to repair the loss. Therefore, this flooring isn’t recommended for areas that are often humid or wet, either.

Tile Water Damage
Grout and tile are quite water resistant, and this is one of the reasons it’s such a good choice for pool areas, showers, entryways, and bathrooms. Your primary concern is the subfloor, as water can get through cracks in the grout, or around the tile field edges. The subfloor will swell if damaged, and the tile and grout can crack or the tile field in this area will be raised.

Linoleum and Vinyl Flooring Water Damage
These both can stand up to water quite well. It can be dried by using a wet vacuum to get rid of the standing water and fans can be placed in the area to dry up water which could have seeped into the subflooring while increasing the evaporation rate.

Hiring the Professionals
Professional water restoration companies, such as SERVPRO, specialize in drying out flooring of all kinds with pumps, fans, wet vacuums and desiccants. We have the right equipment and knowledge to dry out each kind of flooring properly if it is possible to salvage it, and we also know when it needs replacing.
